Benefits
For decades, the Wells Public Library has been a vital part of the community and will play an even greater role in the years ahead as it continually evolves to respond to residents’ changing needs. It will be an active, vibrant center of learning, discovery and social interaction.
The new facility will provide a more inviting and comfortable experience for patrons. The larger building will enable the library to offer a wider array of materials, services and programs to benefit all ages and segments of the community. More than any other organization or entity, it serves people of all interests, backgrounds and ages – as one volunteer put it, “from toddlers to toddling octogenarians.”

- The new facility will be a gathering place where citizens and visitors can come together to enjoy stimulating educational, cultural and social activities to build a stronger sense of community.
- The size and flexible interior spaces of the new building will serve the community for many decades and will enable the library to provide access to evolving technological innovations to foster citizens’ continual digital literacy.
- It will be an environmentally sensitive, energy-efficient model to hold down maintenance and operating costs.
- The new building also will be a prominent symbol of the high value the community places on education, literacy, and an informed, engaged citizenry.
The Growing Again program is more than a construction project. It is a people project.
A Day in the Near Future
Outside, a young couple is chatting at a table in the patio. Inside, several people, books in hand, are settled into easy chairs in the two sunlit reading areas. Others are enjoying a cup of coffee in the café while they page through today’s newspapers.
More than a dozen folks are in the Computer Center, looking up all manner of information on the internet: from recipes and stock market updates to how to train a new puppy. A group of teens (they really are at the library, Mom) is working on a video in their very own Media Lab.
Volunteers are setting up chairs in the Community Program Room for an evening lecture. A book discussion group is underway in the Conference Room. At the circulation desk, a cluster of patrons has gathered to check out books (one comments “I saw this on Amazon for $25!”) A couple is signing up for a workshop in the new Maker Space. Excited young ones begin to arrive for Story Hour. A mother and her two girls are choosing a DVD for family movie night.
There is a pleasant hum of activity throughout the new library and a steady flow of visitors of all ages and interests. The goal of the Growing Again Campaign is to create a central place where young children are introduced to the joy of learning. Where older kids develop skills to succeed in school, in their future careers – and in life. And where all citizens have access to information and opportunities to enrich their lives and fulfill their greatest potential.
