Introduction
THANK YOU!!!!! The Wells Public Library Foundation has raised the funds it needs to complete a decade long expansion. The voters approved accepting the donation on June 13th and the planning board passed our site plan on June 19th.
The Wells Public Library was originally built in 1978. It was expanded in 1992 to keep pace with the needs of the growing community. Today, more than two decades later, it has once again become outdated and too small as the area population has continued to increase and as technology has changed the way information and literature are made available.
The library’s array of programs, services and free loans of books and materials in varied formats extends beyond Wells residents and property owners to the citizens of Moody, Moody Beach, Ogunquit, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, employees of the Town of Wells, teachers in the Wells-Ogunquit Consolidated School District, and students and teachers of the York County Community College. In all, the library serves a population of roughly 25,000 year-round citizens and the approximately 40,000 visitors and employees who swarm to the area each summer.
At its current 11,430 square feet, the library does not meet recommended state and national standards for a town of its size. An independent, professionally-conducted Community Needs Assessment also concluded that, without the proposed improvements and expansion, the library will be unable to serve the community as it should in the years ahead.
